Day 4 – Tuesday 07 January 2020
By Max Elsworth and Nicholas Chapman.
The fourth day was a good day for sailing. We managed to cover lots of ground and flew the spinnaker for most of the day.
While traveling at a decent speed Max spotted an orange object off our bow to starboard. This turned into a mini mission as we tried to gybe round and pick it up, we found out as we got closer that it was an anchor buoy and ended up aborting the mission as we found taking down the pole was a lot of effort for a buoy.
We also encountered a school of dolphins and switched turns on the helm a bit so everyone could check out the dolphins which were happily playing around our bow diving from side to side. During this we passed over what seemed to be an underwater mountain peak which was about 150m deep in an area which was approximately 1km deep. Max tried to steer towards said underwater mountain only to be reminded that it was still 150 metres deep and our chances of seeing anything were slim.
We set up the hammock chair which was a fat jol for a couple of hours. The V-Berth has become the chill area of the boat with up to 4 of us cramming in there at any one time listening to music or just causing conversation. Some of us have abandoned our bunks and now cuddle together in the forepeak while sleeping.
We almost had a very tasty meal on our hands with more bites coming in on the fishing rods. Matt was particularly close to getting us a delicious meal as he was reeling the lines in for the night. Unfortunately our meal managed to get away this time.
Later in the night we encountered what we could only describe as a Life of PI moment, the cloud cover meant that the bio luminescence was so strong that it looked like we were literally riding through crystals as the waves broke near our bow. Ewan, Max, Dom and I stopped what we were doing in that moment to admire this amazing sight.
