Day 3 – Monday 06 January 2020
We woke up in the morning to a magnificent sunrise. The wind had picked up from the previous day and we were averaging about 6-7 knots. What woke those of us asleep up in the morning was Josh running around the boat and screaming with joy while shouting some numbers – we had just received our position from the race committee and needless to say we were more than happy with our progress. Instead of Pronutro and Future Life we had delicious cinnamon and apple oats. We then decided to hoist the spinnaker which went smoothly and we picked up speed with Josh and Mika hitting 10.7 knots, which they never let go after until Daniel and Matt later beat this with 11.6 knots. We had much fun cruising at a faster speed and got another rush of excitement later in the day when we heard the fishing reels screaming as they started running out. Everyone was on deck running about shouting, “we got one!”. We started to reel it in, but then while we were doing so we lost the fish… and the lure. So that left us a bit mellow and we all went back to our lazy stages.
For dinner we had a delicious curry and rice and all ate in peace. While testing the HF Radio we ended up picking up Cape Talk! The presenter happened to be Lester who interviewed us a few weeks ago. The rest of the day was spent with many beautiful views. The sunsets in the middle of the ocean are always the best, but this one was particularly beautiful, striking the whole sky red -it did truly look like an classic African sunset. After it faded, everyone headed to bed. Later in the night, the clouds revealed a star-struck sky. Now that we were further from land we could see all the stars, the bright stars and the detailed milky-way. It was so amazing to see the wonders of nature. That night Josh and Mika hit a new speed record of 12 knots, which once again they never let us forget.
Day 3 was a great day of sailing with really good winds and much faster speeds, which was very much what we had all been waiting for.
